Founded in the 10th century as a Viking town, capital since the 15th century and an important regional center in the time of Christian IV (17th century), the city had to be remodeled after plagues and fires in the 18th century. Today Copenhagen is a place chosen by lovers of culture, history and architecture. These are the things to see in the Danish capital:

1. The Little Mermaid

It is one of the essential places and a symbol recognized worldwide. The statue is barely one meter long, but you cannot miss it, either by walking along the river bank or on a boat ride. The Little Mermaid is the protagonist of the famous tale by the Danish poet Hans Christian Andersen, which became enormously popular after the Disney film.

2. Christiania

It is a “hippie” community and, strangely enough, it is the second most visited place in all of Denmark. It is an absolutely peculiar visit, since this neighborhood, which proclaims itself independent, has self-government and very particular rules of coexistence.

3. Stroget

If you are a shopping lover, this network of pedestrian streets is perfect for you. In Stroget you will find all kinds of objects, especially local souvenirs and gifts. In addition, there are stores of the main brands in the country.

At the end of the walk you can rest in the beautiful Kongens Nytorv square.  It is always very lively, whether by day or night, and it also houses several historical buildings that are worth visiting.

4. Town Hall Square

Another thing to see in Copenhagen. It has a statue of the city’s “prodigal son” (Andersen) and the beautiful City Hall building, dominated by an elegant clock tower.

5. Amalienborg Palace

It is the official residence of the royal family of Denmark and is a group of buildings grouped around the Square that bears the same name as the palace. It is one of the most beautiful and visited places in the capital.

If you are a fan of stately architecture, do not hesitate to visit Christiansborg Palace, current seat of Parliament and with a tower from which you can get impressive views of the entire city. Copenhagen also has to see Rosenborg Castle, which houses a museum that traces the history of the monarchy and has a very nice garden where you can rest and sunbathe.

6. Royal Library

It is a kind of paradise for those who love to read and also see buildings with exquisite architecture. The walk through the Copenhagen Library (known as the “Black Diamond”) can take a couple of hours.

Another of the outstanding sites within civil architecture is the Opera, with one of the best acoustics in the world. It does not matter if you attend a show or not, it is worth visiting the building.

7. Marble Church

It is crowned by a huge green and blue dome. The Lutheran church called “marble” is one of the favorites of the Danes. For tourists, it is also interesting because it allows you to see impressive panoramic views of the entire city from its tower.

Another of the churches to see in Copenhagen is that of San Nicolás, converted into a contemporary center. You will recognize it by its square tower. Inside it houses an exhibition of modern art.

8. Tivoli Gardens

Are you traveling to Copenhagen with children? Then the Tivoli Gardens is the first place you should go. It is one of the oldest amusement parks on the continent and offers fun for all ages.

9. National Museum of Denmark

If you like museums you cannot miss the most important in the capital of Denmark. Only the building will enchant you. The collections range from ancient cultures (Greek, Egyptian, etc.) to exhibits dedicated to the Inuit.
