It is one of the most visited cities in Belgium. With its medieval atmosphere and canals, Bruges is often one of the favorite excursions to take from the capital, Brussels. If you are thinking of discovering it, you will have to eat there, for that reason, we are going to tell you what the gastronomy of Bruges is like, delicious and authentic.

The gastronomy of Bruges : what you must try

One of the promises that visitors receive as soon as they set foot in this city is that the best French fries in the world are made here. When you try them, you will realize why the promise is so resounding.

Bruges is potato chip heaven. Anywhere you find them they will be served freshly made, very hot and with some type of accompanying sauce. In short, you cannot talk about the gastronomy of Bruges and not make a reference to them.

This crunchy snack , accompanied by 10 different toppings, is so well known and consumed that it even has its own museum. That’s right, it’s about the Frietmuseum and if you love French fries, you have to take a tour of it.

And when you are having lunch or eating, there is nothing better than accompanying it with a delicious craft beer. In Bruges there are two major breweries: Fort Lapin and De Halve Maan. They are known for their Brugse Zot , which has won several awards.

Besides enjoying a good beer, you have the possibility to learn about the process in their factories. During the visit you will find out, for example, that beer is used in the preparation of many typical dishes of the region.

If it is time for a snack or breakfast, or if you like sweet things more than salty ones, we recommend that you try the delicious waffles. It is a specialty of the country but one that in this city they have perfected and almost consider it theirs.

You can take a break at any time of the day and choose a cafeteria where they will serve you a hearty cup of hot chocolate with a waffle. You can choose between different fillings: fruit, cream, cheese. .. there are many alternatives! And they are all delicious!

Following in the line of sweets, another of the must-sees of Bruges is chocolate, as it happens throughout the country. The chocolates here are some of the richest you’ve ever tasted. We recommend some of the artisan shops in the city center, such as Dumon on Eiermarkt street.

The gastronomy of Belgium

In Bruges you can also try typical Belgian dishes, and especially Flemish. As starters, you can choose asparagus a la flamenca (served with hard-boiled egg, melted butter and chopped parsley), shrimp croquettes, shrimp-stuffed tomatoes and hot soups that are eaten in winter and autumn.

Mussels are known throughout Belgium, but in Bruges you must try them. The city is very close to the sea and this is, therefore, one of the star dishes. You can taste them prepared in a thousand different ways, but the typical thing is to cook them with celery and white wine.

There are other dishes that you can try, such as the hutsepot (stewed potatoes, carrots, leeks, onions, bacon and sausages). If you prefer, you can choose between rabbit stew with plums, beer and condiments; carbonated with beef and beer; or the chicory rolls with ham and béchamel sauce. Any of them are delicious.

Desserts

Delicate cheeses are part of Belgian gastronomy and there are more than 80 varieties in the country. One of the most famous is the Fromage de Herve and among the most popular are the Passendaele, the Floreffe, the Beauvoorde and the Limburger. They are eaten after the main course or with dessert.

Another possibility when it comes to desserts is to try the bread pudding. It is a sweet made from stale bread, milk, butter and sugar. You can also try the rice cake, which includes vanilla and cream or chocolate.

As you can see, there are many typical dishes that you can try, although, as we mentioned, the gastronomy of Bruges has waffles, chocolate and French fries as its main characters.
