Pozar is a small town located about 100 kilometers from the Greek city of Thessaloniki and very close to the Macedonian border. In fact, the other side of the mountains that make up the postcard already belongs to the other country. We visit a place sown with thermal water pools appreciated since ancient times for their healing powers.

How is Pozar

This is by no means one of the most visited places in Greece. In fact, it’s the opposite. Most of the visitors you find there will be Greeks, since the main tours of the Hellenic country do not reach the area. But without a doubt, they are missing something very interesting and different.

As we said, Pozar is located at the foot of the mountain that serves as a natural border between Greece and Macedonia. Around the pools there are ravines, waterfalls and caves, which makes the environment very special.

The best are the natural pools formed with the water of the San Nicolás River, which is found throughout the year at a temperature of more than 35ºC. If you travel to the area during the coldest months of the year, the contrast is incredible.

Being in the water at such high temperatures, while it is so cold outside and you enjoy a landscape of great beauty, is one of the best things you can do in the north of the country. Not only is it very relaxing, but its waters are famous for relieving pain of all kinds : dermatological, gynecological, rheumatic …

Finally, it is important to note that entry to the Pozar hot springs is completely free. In addition, it has some additional services, such as bathrobe rental, for example, for a small fee.

The area, as we said, is not only known for its hot springs. Its landscape has many other attractions. For example, you can take one of the trails on Mount Voras Kaimaktsalan and enjoy nature in its purest form.

Another option is to take a short tour to see one of the 16 prehistoric caves in the area. They are accessed by a curious wooden staircase.

And, if you want to know some of the legends of the area, nothing like walking through the Dark Forest. The Hellenic tradition says that with the wood of its trees, Alexander the Great built the most fearsome weapon of the Macedonian army: a 6 meter long spear called Sarissa.

And finally, if what you like is winter sports, you cannot miss Kaimaktsalan station. This is the highest ski resort in all of Greece, at more than 2300 meters of altitude. Of course, you will have to spend several days in the area to be able to enjoy everything in a relaxed way.

As we said, Pozar is located about 100 kilometers from Thessaloniki, capital of the Central Macedonia region and the second most important city in the country. Therefore, the most likely thing is that the journey begins in this city.

The best option is to rent a car so as not to depend on public transport and also save time. In Thessaloniki there are quite a few car rental agencies, so it is advisable to compare prices and conditions (many require abusive bonds). It is easy that you can rent it for a whole day for about € 40.

From Thessaloniki, and about 40 kilometers from Pozar is Édessa, the administrative capital of the Pella region and, according to the Greeks, “the city of water”. It has a quite beautiful and interesting old town.

However, in the vicinity of this city, what is really worth visiting is the largest waterfall in Greece.  It is a waterfall of more than 70 meters in a unique environment.
