This is the presentation of Freiburg, a city founded in 1120 by a duke (whose castle is earlier) and from its inception enjoyed great reputation and commercial privileges. Wood, wool and silver were their main businesses.

Shortly after, the cathedral and the famous “bachle” were built, small water channels that run through it. From there it passed “from hand to hand”: first it belonged to Austria (when the first university was built), then to France and finally to Germany. Although the flag of Freiburg is the same as that of England (white with a red cross), this country had no interference in its foundation or development.

Freiburg: sun, environment and parties

Due to its location, this German city enjoys a mild temperate temperature, never lower than 11 ° C. But that is not the only important thing that we can highlight but that in Freiburg you can enjoy nothing less than… 1740 hours of sunshine a year! Something that may be little if we compare it with the Caribbean, but taking into account where it is located, it is to celebrate.

Local politics has in turn made it a pro-ecology enclave and has the largest number of green facilities on the entire European continent. There is an Institute of Ecology, a Solar Energy Society and a bicycle circuit, the means of transport par excellence.

Festivals are the order of the day in Freiburg. In winter there is an outdoor theatrical improvisation event, every two years an ethnographic film event takes place and at different times there are jazz and rock concerts.

The new presbytery took almost two centuries to complete. The bell tower is square and the tower is 116 meters high. The stained glass windows are original from the Middle Ages.

Old Town Hall and New Town Hall

The first was built in 1157 and linked several old buildings. Its facade is completely painted red and is adorned with a golden clock. The current headquarters of the tourist office preserves the original architecture.

In its beginnings, the city was fortified and three gates remain from that time. The first, of great defensive value because it is at a crossroads, is called de los Suabos. The second, the oldest of the towers (built in the 13th century) is by Martin and the third, erected in 1677 during the French occupation on the old Baroque walls, is called de Breisach.
