Fuerteventura, Discover A Wonderful Island

Fuerteventura, discover a wonderful island

The Canary Island of Fuerteventura is often only known for its excellent beaches, for many the best in the entire archipelago. And, of course, because it is the ideal place to practice water sports based on the wind. However, in Fuerteventura there is much more to discover and then we are going to show you.

Beaches south of Fuerteventura

We have already said that one of the main reasons to visit Fuerteventura is its beaches. Well, the most spectacular ones may be in the south of the island, on the Jandía peninsula. There are the sister beaches of Sotavento and Barlovento, those of Cofete, those of the Costa Calma or that of Solana del Matorral.

Beaches for all tastes, more urbanized or almost wild, for bathing, for kitesurfing or for taking impressive photos. It is essential to enjoy them on a trip to Fuerteventura.

Also in the northernmost part of the island we can find special beaches, for example in the El Cotillo area. A magnificent place to lie down to sunbathe, learn to enjoy windsurfing and kite sailing, or to contemplate a most beautiful panorama. A place where the attention is drawn to an airy fortress that has watched over the arrival of ships to this coast since the 18th century.

Corralejo is one of the towns most frequented by tourists who come to Fuerteventura. There are numerous options for accommodation or leisure. In other words, it is a highly urbanized area.

But at the same time, in its vicinity is the incredible Natural Park of the Dunes of Corralejo. In this park, at times, it will give us the feeling of being in the middle of the Sahara desert. There are 2,600 hectares of white sands that reflect the sun in an amazing way and contrast with the blue of the ocean.

Fuerteventura, like the rest of the islands of the Canary archipelago, also has a volcanic origin. And that is manifested in many places on its surface. For example, in the Magic Mountain of Tindaya, which is actually the remains of an ancient volcanic chimney.

A place full of spirituality for the islanders for centuries, as evidenced by the fact that engravings of great archaeological interest have been found there. With its 400 meters high, which stands out in the landscape, today it is also a very attractive place for visitors to the island.

The Calderón Hondo

Another vestige of volcanic origin is the Calderón Hondo, located near the town of Lajares, north of Fuerteventura. Here you can visit an ancient crater that rises about 300 meters above ocean level and is 70 meters deep.

A most accessible excursion, which allows you to discover the volcanism of the island and also contemplate it from a certain height. The walk, of course, is worth it.

Today, the capital is Puerto del Rosario, but this was not always the case. In the past, the capital resided in Betancuria. And in fact, it is one of the towns that keeps all the essence of the island, as well as several historical monuments of interest, such as its beautiful church dedicated to Santa María.

And we are going to end up in a corner of Fuerteventura that is probably not the most famous, but which is perhaps one of the best places to feel and breathe the calm that this island emanates. We are talking about the village of Majanicho, on the very shores of the Atlantic.

In this small hamlet, one can relax and it is not difficult to discover what life was like in the past in all of Fuerteventura, before it became the great mecca of European tourism that it is today.

This has been our tour of the wonderful island of Fuerteventura, but there are still wonderful corners to discover. Nothing like planning a getaway to do it, don’t you think?
