Segovia: a fascinating city

1. Alcazar of Segovia

The Alcázar of Segovia is one of the most important monuments in all of Spain, especially because of its distinctive shape. This imposing castle stands on a hill at the confluence of the Clamores and Eresma rivers.

This fortress was originally built as a fortress, however, over time its functions changed. This is how it became a state prison, a military academy, an artillery center and a royal palace. At present it is open to the public and inside there is a museum and a valuable exhibition of military archives.

The Alcázar of Segovia was built around the year 1122, or at least since that date there are records of this important fortification.  However, it should be noted that granite ashlars similar to those used in the construction of the Roman aqueduct were found in the place. This leads us to suppose that before the fortress was erected there must have been some fortification from the time of Roman domination.

The castle as such is divided into two large areas. The interior part includes the dependencies, a chapel and several noble rooms, such as the Throne room, the Kings room, the Piñas, the Galera and others. On the outside we find a moat, a drawbridge, a Herrerian patio and the beautiful keep.

2. Aqueduct of Segovia

The Aqueduct of Segovia is one of the most important constructions in the city. It dates from the second century AD, the time of the Roman emperor Trajan.

This important building was built with granite ashlars without mortar between them. The highest part measures around 28 meters and has a total of 167 arches. From the arrival to the Plaza de Día Sanz there are 75 simple arches, later 44 arches of double order and they continue in a similar order until the 167 are completed.
