Tunisia And Its Impressive Cities

Tunisia and its impressive cities

Tunisia, despite its small size, is one of the most beautiful countries in North Africa. Among the places that attract special attention we can see impressive cities such as the capital itself, the ruins of ancient Carthage or the towns of Tabarka or Djerba.

One of the most impressive cities in this North African country is its own capital, also called Tunis.  It has held the title of capital since 1160 and did not lose it even with the entry of the French, which took place in 1881.

It must be said that the arrival of France in Tunisia meant a radical change in the city. It modernized and became a more European-style population, updating some of its customs.

However, the true beauty of Tunisia, a city older even than Carthage itself, lies in its more classic areas. Particularly noteworthy is  the impressive Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site  since 1979. At its heart is the Jamma ez Sitouna Mosque, built more than a thousand years ago, in which time has passed with grace and pride.

The Medina of Tunis, in addition to the aforementioned mosque, is made up of innumerable alleys and souks full of merchants and guilds as if time had not passed through its tiles and corners. Without a doubt, an exciting trip that is well worth it.

The ruins of Carthage

The ruins of Carthage are another impressive place to visit in Tunisia,  although after the defeat of the ancient Punic city nothing remains of its former splendor. We can, however, imagine the proud location of great generals like Hannibal, capable of arriving in Rome in the middle of winter with an entire army that included elephants.

Today, the ruins of Carthage include a truly spectacular visit for what this site means to the ancient history of mankind. The good condition in which places such as the Antonio Baths, the largest in Africa, are preserved; the set located on the hill of Brysa, or the National Museum of Carthage.

As is logical, the ruins of Carthage are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. And it is that in a unique and quiet environment, with beautiful and peaceful places, the vestiges of an ancient civilization that has marked the passing of time await the visitor, and whose remains still seem to want to tell thousands of stories to those who end up in its territory .

Tabarka

We are now marching to another wonderful city in Tunis, Tabarka. Although it is close to the coast, its main attraction lies in the green fields of olive trees and cork oaks, which is curious in a place as arid and desert as this North African country.

Among the excellent natural attractions of Tabarka, we find places of dazzling beauty such as Lake Ichkeul, a wonderful place for all ornithologists and bird lovers, in the heart of the Tunisian National Park.

Djerba

Now we are approaching the southeast of Tunis to take our steps in Djerba, a perfect area for the good traveler to rest. Among its great and relaxed charms we find impressive Mediterranean beaches, ideal to enjoy among palm trees as if it were an oasis.

Djerba was a place of passage for all kinds of civilizations throughout history, such as the Romans, Carthaginians and Byzantines. Erriadh stands out, a Jewish neighborhood that still preserves a wonderful synagogue with an ancient Torah.

Nefta

We ended our trip in Nefta, another Tunisian oasis. Despite being destroyed in the 11th century, it rose again on its ashes to recover all the splendor of Roman times, transforming itself into a holy city of Jerid. Here you will find more than 20 mosques and La Corbeille park, a spectacular palm grove.

Without a doubt, Tunisia is a country full of contrasts for the visitor. The religion, the excellent paradisiacal beaches, the oases, the archaeological remains of the great Mediterranean civilizations and the charm of its cities make this place a must for any good travel lover.
