Visit the monuments and places of interest of Frigiliana

Something essential to do in Frigiliana is to visit its historic center. Of Moorish-Mudejar origin, it is one of the best preserved in Malaga. In fact, it is declared a Historic Artistic Site. It is made up of buildings with whitewashed facades and walkways that give access to the houses without direct entrance from the streets.

In the Malaga municipality, its monuments cannot be overlooked either. The Old Fountain, which dates from the 17th century, stands out; the hermitage of Ecce Homo, linked to the baroque Christian festivals of Frigiliana; the church of San Antonio de Padua, in the Renaissance style; and the Real Positos, an old silo built in 1767.

We continue the artistic-cultural tour of the Torreón, which is currently attached to a house; the remains of the Moorish castle, which occupied an area of about four thousand square meters; and the Casa del Apero, which today houses the Municipal Library, the Archaeological Museum and the tourist office.

Separate mention requires El Ingenio or Palace of the Counts of Frigiliana, which was built at the end of the 16th century following a Renaissance style, although it also integrates materials from the Moorish castle. Its importance lies in the fact that it is the only cane honey factory that is still active in all of Europe.

There is much more to do in Frigiliana.  It is interesting to visit the Archaeological Museum, inaugurated in 2009. One hundred and twenty-five pieces found in this Malaga municipality are exhibited chronologically. An example of this are the Phoenician vessels found in the Cerrillo de las Sombras.

Other pieces that stand out in the museum are the skull of a child dating from the Neolithic era ; a Moorish dagger from the 16th century that was probably used to harm a Christian during the Battle of the Rock; or a jewel from the 6th century BC in which the name of the Egyptian deity Amon-Ra appears engraved in hieroglyphic characters.

Another option is to visit the Santa Fiora Botanical Garden, designed by the landscaper Manuel Morcillo. In it you can find specimens of sugar cane; palmitos, which is the only autochthonous palm of the Iberian Peninsula; olive trees or native medicinal plants such as thyme, oregano, rosemary or rue.

Nor can you fail to try the gastronomy of the place, starting with its most typical dish: the kid. Equally recommended are the migas, the arropía, the San Juan cakes, the marcochas, the sweet potato with honey, the muscatel wine and, how could it be otherwise, the cane honey, made in El Ingenio.

Once all the monuments have been seen and all the activities offered by the municipality have been carried out, you can take advantage of it to discover its privileged environment. One option is to go to the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park, which serves as the natural border between Malaga and Granada.

In the area of more than forty thousand hectares , the white and gray tones of ridges and ravines predominate, a consequence of the large amount of marble that exists in the area. In this space, also full of trees, you can see large eagles or mountain goats.

On the other hand, if the weather is good, you can go to the beach in a nearby municipality. In Torrox, the Ferrara-Las Lindes beach stands out, extensive and well equipped; and in Nerja, the Maro beach, which is characterized by its crystal clear waters and the dreamlike landscape that surrounds it. In fact, it is considered by many to be one of the best in Spain.

These municipalities also stand out for the monuments they house. Thus, while in Nerja you can visit its famous cave, the Balcón de Europa or the Aguila aqueduct; In Torrox you cannot miss the convent of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, the Roman ruins near the Torrox lighthouse or the La Granja aqueduct.
